Here are preliminary “do it yourself” methods for determining if you need our expertise.
Head to the attic with a pen and paper - it takes just a few minutes and answer these questions. If you have vaulted ceilings - skip step one. If you have a steep roof wth sun exposure - step two will not be as effective.
For all buildings - Is the insulation in your attic or vaulted ceiling over 10 years old?
Step One
- Do you have any can lights exposed?
- Can you see the joists?
- If so, is the attic insulated with fiberglass batts?
- Do you see any discoloration of the insulation?
If possible, turn on the lights in the area under the attic and close the attic entrance. Turn off the attic lighting.
-Do you see any light from below?
If YES to any of the above questions - you are wasting cash and comfort.
Step Two
Head outside to look at your roof. These questions require snow on the roof to answer.
- Does your house accumulate massive icicles when snow is on the roof?
- Do you see channels of missing snow?
- Do you see patches of missing snow?
- Are the joists missing snow and the areas between them snow-covered?
Feel free to take a picture and email it to us if you are not comfortable with how you interpret the results.
